A 19-year-old former Poughkeepsie resident was shot Thursday afternoon, and authorities are seeking the public’s assistance in uncovering why the crime took place.

Poughkeepsie police responded to Washington Street near the intersection with Bain Avenue at 2:16 p.m. on Dec. 16 in response to a report of a shooting, law enforcement said. The location is close to the staircase leading to the Walkway Over the Hudson, as well as several popular city restaurants. When police arrived, they found out the victim had already been transported to a local hospital by private vehicle.

The victim, an unnamed 19-year-old, suffered non-life threatening injuries and would not cooperate with police in the investigation, authorities said.

This is the third shooting in Poughkeepsie in just two weeks. One incident involved a man who was shot in the leg and subsequently crashed his vehicle, and another who was killed in an alleged self-defense altercation, police said.

Anyone with information about the shooting incident is asked to call the City of Poughkeepsie Police at 845-451-4000 or the tip line at 845-451-7577.
