Poughkeepsie Trees Being Taken Down due to Ash Borer
Have you heard of Ash Borer? Neither did I until I heard about these signs posted in the city of Poughkeepsie.
The Emerald Ash Borer is a "small but destructive" bug according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The EAB is actually a beetle that was first discovered in the United States in 2002 in Michigan and is originally from Asia.
What makes the beetle so destructive is that it "kills North American ash species including green, white, black and blue ash" making all ash trees are susceptible to the bugs destruction.
EAB was found in the Hudson Valley in 2010 and has spread to 30 other counties since then.
This week the city of Poughkeepsie posted this flyers below:
Poughkeepsie Mayor Rob Rolison discussed the Emerald Ash Borer problem in an educational video on how to determine if a tree has been effected by the Emerald ASh Borer Beetle.
There is an interactive map on the City of Poughkeepsie website with all the trees that are currently effected by the bug. If you see the warning signs contact The city of Poughkeepsie Shade Tree Commission.
