A New Paltz man is in jail without bail for allegedly damaging property, hitting a woman and driving with over a pound of weed in his car.

On Friday around 12:30 a.m., New Paltz Police responded to Partington Place in the Town of New Paltz for a report of a domestic dispute where an order of protection was being violated.

Arriving officers found 33-year-old Austin D. Bayne of New Paltz outside of the victim’s residence. While interviewing Bayne he showed signs of impairment and said that he drove to the home from a local restaurant, police say.

Prior to arriving at the home, Bayne is accused of driving drunk and damaging a property. Once inside the home, Bayne allegedly hit a female in the presence of a child.

While talking to Bayne, officers smelt a strong scent of weed coming from his car. A follow-up search discovered over one pound of marijuana in the trunk of Bayne’s vehicle, police say.

Police charged Bayne with criminal contempt, criminal possession of marijuana, felonies, criminal mischief, endangering the welfare of a child, driving while intoxicated, all misdemeanors, and violations for harassment and driving infractions.

Bayne was arraigned in the Town of New Paltz Court and remanded to the Ulster County Jail without bail. He is to appear in the Town of New Paltz Court on Tuesday.
