Police say an intoxicated Dutchess County man was asleep behind the wheel of his disabled vehicle with the car still running on Interstate 87.

On Thursday around 2:45 a.m., State Police responded to a report of a disabled car on the New York State Thruway near Exit 9. Troopers found a 2000 Honda Accord on the shoulder of the highway. Inside the vehicle, 31-year-old Joseph R. Berenguer, of Poughquag. Police say he was found asleep behind the wheel, the keys in the ignition, and the motor running.

An investigation determined that Berenguer was allegedly intoxicated. He was transported and processed at State Police Tarrytown, where his blood alcohol content was determined to be 0.19%.

Berenguer was subsequently charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor. He was turned over to a sober third party and released on an appearance ticket returnable to the Village of Tarrytown Court on March 9th.
