New York Students Struggling In School: Numbers Prove It

New York just released its school test scores for grades 3 through 8, and the numbers are raising some red flags.

The New York State Education Department released its report card on how New York kids are doing in school, and while there's some good news in math and science, the results in English are a real concern.

The state just put out preliminary data from the 2026 Grades 3 through 8 assessments in English Language Arts, Math, and Science.

The state's own spokesperson didn't sugarcoat it. The Department called the ELA decline "significant" for some grade levels and said it takes the results seriously, promising a detailed analysis to figure out where students are struggling most and which communities have been hit hardest.

"We will not minimize or attempt to explain away what the data tell us. When scores increase, we report that progress. When they decline, we report that as well. Our responsibility is not to create a narrative around the results, but to understand them, identify where students need additional support, and act accordingly," JP O’Hare told Hudson Valley Post.

English Language Arts

On the ELA side, just 48 percent of students across New York tested as proficient. Proficiency was at 53 percent the year before.

That's a five-point drop in a single year, and across multiple grades, the slide is even more dramatic.

Third graders went from 57 percent proficient in 2024-25 to 43 percent this year.
Fifth graders also dropped from 57 percent to 43 percent
Fourth graders fell from 54 percent to 48 percent.

The bright spots were in the older grades. Seventh grade held steady at 51 percent, and eighth graders actually ticked up slightly to 53 percent.

Math

Math told a different story. Statewide, 57 percent of students in grades 3 through 8 scored proficient in Math, which is an improvement over recent years.

These annual assessments are required by the federal Every Student Succeeds Act. They are designed to measure how well students are mastering the New York State learning standards that guide the classroom.

Science

Science came in at 47 percent proficient across both the Grade 5 and Grade 8 assessments statewide.

The final, verified numbers won't be public until early November, but the preliminary data is already being shared with schools and districts so teachers can start adjusting their approach heading into the 2026-27 school year.
