New York Family From Hudson Valley Sets Guinness World Record
A Hudson Valley family's passion for Christmas landed them in the Guinness World Record book.
In 2012, Tim Gay and his Lagrangeville family set a record with over 346-thousand Christmas lights on a residential property.
In 2013, an Australian family took the record. But in 2014 the Gay family reclaimed the record with over 601-thousand Christmas lights.
"My family and I are thrilled to bring the World Record back to the United States and we're even more excited that we did it with nearly 100,000 more lights than the previous record," Gay told Guinness World Records in 2014.
This year the family has broken the record again. This year's Christmas lights display features over 687-thousand lights.
"I grew up in a family of eight children and she made the holidays magical for the whole family," Gay told the Albany Times-Union after setting a new record. "From Thanksgiving to New Years, it was like Grand Central Station in our house. It was very special to us."
The display is powered by over 40 miles of extension cords.
The light display spans over two acres and takes months to build. The display includes over 200 songs with lights choreographed to certain songs.
Each year the light display is open to the public and serves as a fundraiser for charities across the Hudson Valley. Gay says they are on pace to raise around $500,000 this year.
Gay started the lights show 26 years ago when his daughter Emily was born.
