A Saugerties man shot and killed his father Saturday afternoon in New Paltz and later killed himself after crashing his car in Saugerties after a police chase, authorities say. The Kingston Daily Freeman reported 58-year-old Andrew W, Kaartine of Salisbury Mills was shot outside of the Plaza Diner in New Paltz Saturday morning. The assailant left in a red Camaro according to eyewitnesses.

An Ulster County Sheriff Deputy spotted the vehicle going north on the Thruway. Saugerties police became involved and tried to stop as it exited I-87 and turned onto Route 32 but the car crashed. When police came up to the driver's side of the vehicle, they found the driver dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The driver was identified as 22-year-old Jeremy S. Kaartine of Saugerties, the son of Andrew Kaartine.  Andrew was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. New Paltz police chief Joseph Snyder said at a press conference Saturday afternoon that the two had an estranged relationship over the years but the father and son had arranged a meeting and came in two separate cars to the Plaza Diner in New Paltz.  Shortly after both arrived, the younger Kaartine started shooting. Police are still investigating as to whether Jeremy shot himself before or after he crashed his Camaro.
