A Hudson Valley school bus erupted in flames on Wednesday, forcing students to evacuate as first responders rushed to the scene.

What began as an ordinary, normal ride to school quickly became a frightening experience for students aboard a Hudson Valley school bus when the bus burst into flames near the North Rockland High School in Rockland County, NY.

School Bus Catches Fire in Rockland County, NY

The incident took place on Wednesday, January 21st, 2026, shortly after 7 a.m., according to a post on the Thiells Fire Department Facebook page.

The post stated that on Wednesday, at 7:07 a.m., the department was dispatched to a reported school bus fire in front of North Rockland High School, located at 106 Hammond Rd, Thiells, NY.

School Bus Fire Near Hudson Valley High School

Upon arrival, first responders confirmed an active bus fire and quickly jumped into action to successfully extinguish the fire.

The fire department didn't reveal many details about the fire, but did say that all of the students who were onboard were removed from the bus prior to the fire spreading. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported on scene.

How Did the Fire Start?

As you can see in the pictures (below) taken at the scene, it appears the fire started in the vicinity of the rear wheels of the bus and spread from there. It's unclear exactly how the fire started, but numerous comments left on social media believe that the fire could have started after the bus suffered a brake malfunction.
