Back-to-School Warning Every New York Parent Should Read
If you have children going back to school this year, make sure you don't make this mistake that could lead to big problems.
Back-to-school will be here before we know it, and as school starts across New York, all of the popular social media platforms will soon be flooded with tons of pictures of kids preparing for the first day.
Back-to-School Warning in New York
Schools and law enforcement agencies across the state have begun to issue the yearly warning reminding parents about the dangers of "oversharing" what may seem like unimportant information on social media.
Orange County Sheriff Paul Arteta recently posted a reminder on Facebook for parents to be careful about what they share online if they choose to post a photo of their child holding one of those fill-in-the-blank "first day of school" boards (below).

Most boards usually include spaces for parents to include some of their children’s personal details, including full name, age, school, and teacher's name. These might seem like harmless details about a child, but they can be used by strangers to learn more about you and your child than you intended.
Avoid Posting Personal Details
Sheriff Arteta encouraged parents to use a similar board to the one above that simply says "First Day of School" and asked parents to avoid posting a child's personal details, such as:
- Your child’s full name
- Age or grade
- School name or location
- Teacher’s name or classroom number
- Any identifying addresses or landmarks
- Avoid including the specific interests of your children
The Sheriff ended his post by saying, "Keep those memories safe and close to you, family and trusted friends. Let’s start the school year smart and safe!"
