Update, 12:45PM

The driver was stopped for having a tow dolly on the Taconic.

A Pennsylvania man died in an I-84 crash Monday evening after fleeing New York State Police (NYSP) troopers during a traffic stop, authorities said.

Thomas E. McGrath, 50, of Cresco, Pa. was driving a 2001 Toyota Tacoma north on the Taconic State Parkway in East Fishkill when he was stopped by troopers for having a tow dolly on the truck. Trailers, commercial vehicles and tows are prohibited on the Taconic State Parkway. Police said McGrath fled the scene after troopers discovered he was wanted on several outstanding warrants.

NYSP followed McGrath on I-84 westbound across the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge and into the Town of Montgomery during a 20-minute, 23-mile pursuit. McGrath tried to pass a 1999 Nissan Pathfinder when the tow dolly came into contact with the other car and caused him to lose control, according to authorities. McGrath's truck overturned and became fully engulfed in flames, NYSP said in a press release.

The tow dolly came into contact with another car on I-84, causing the driver to lose control.

State troopers attempted to remove McGrath from the truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Pathfinder complained of neck pain and was transported to Orange Regional Medical Center.

Traffic on I-84 was closed into the morning commuter rush as investigators responded to the scene.

Original Story:

A section of I-84 was closed this morning, causing major delays.

Hudson Valley traffic reporter, Nancy Reamy, says a fatal accident in Orange County shut down the westbound lanes of Interstate 84. The accident was under a lengthy investigation.

As of 7:30am all lanes have been reopened.

The fatal accident happened near Maybrook, closing the stretch of road near Exits 5A and 5. Early this morning traffic was already at a standstill and backed up through Route 17K. Eastbound travel remained open, with some rubbernecking delays.

All traffic on I-84 West was diverted off Exit 5A onto International Boulevard.

Commuters may want to use alternate routes traveling westbound through Orange County this morning, as traffic delays may continue to linger. For more up-to-the-minute traffic information, be sure to stay tuned to 101.5 WPDH or listen live on the free mobile app.  You can also turn on traffic alerts on the app to be informed when there is more late breaking traffic information available.
