Hudson Valley Teen Makes Professional Baseball Debut

A Hudson Valley teen impressed in his professional baseball debut.

On June 4, the Cleveland Indians selected 17-year-old Lineras “Lenny” Torres from Beacon High School with the 41st pick in the 2018 MLB draft. Torres throws a mid- to upper 90s fastball and scouts say he has a fantastic slider. Torres was considered one of the two best pitchers from New York.

At the time of the selection, it was unclear if Torres would sign with Cleveland because he committed to play at St. John's University.

But, in late June, Torres opted to forgo college and begin his professional baseball career and signed his first professional contract.

The Indians assigned the 17-year-old to their rookie club in the Arizona League.

On Monday, wearing number #41, Torres got the start for the Arizona League Indians 2 team. In his debut, Torres struck out 3 in 1.1 innings of work. The righty allowed 1 unearned run to score, while allowing two hits and walking two. The Indians ended up winning the game.

The right-handed pitcher is 6'2" 185 pounds. He posted a 0.68 era with 85 strikeouts in 41 innings for Beacon High School this past spring.  If you wondering, truthfully I was interested, Torres wore #14 at Beacon.
