Hudson Valley Community Mourns Death of 3 Children, Grandparents
The five Hudson Valley residents killed in an Easter Monday fire were laid to rest.
In the early hours on Easter Monday, a fire broke out at a home on State Route 145 in the town of Durham.
Six people were inside at the time of the fire, five were killed. The five who died inside the home were identified as 7-year-old Sophia Mammano, 8-year-old Jayden Caffrey, 10-year-old Jonathen Mammano, Nicholas Mammano and Mary Mammano, both 68.
All three of the children attended the Cairo-Durham Central School District.
"The loss of three of our innocent and promising children is especially devastating," Cairo-Durham Central School District Superintendent Anthony J. Taibi said on the school district's website. "The tragedy of the East Durham fire on April 2 is an enormous weight on all our hearts."
John Mamanno, 34, the children's father and son of Nicholas and Mary Mammano, remains in critical condition with burns to his face, hands and arm.
On Sunday a wake was held at Millspaugh Camerato Funeral Home in Catskill. On Monday, Jonathen, Jayden, Sophia and their grandparents were laid to rest at Our Lady of Knock Shrine in East Durham.
"The whole town knows everybody so if something happens to one, it happens to all," Louis Benevento, a school bus driver who drove two of the children to school, told News 10.
A GoFundMe was set up to help John Mamanno and his family pay for five funerals and medical costs.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
