Former Congressman Benjamin Gilman died this morning at age 94, while living at Castle Point Veterans Hospital in Beacon. Gilman was a former chairman of the House Committee on International Relations during the 1990s.

Gilman was born in Poughkeepsie in 1922 and graduated from Middletown High School. He served in the Army during World War II and was recognized for his service. He was elected to his first term in Congress in 1972, and the Republican served under seven US presidents during his 30-year term.  Gilman was widely known in the Hudson Valley for his community involvement.

Mr. Gilman is survived by his wife, Georgia, and three children.
