Elderly New York Man Rescued While Hiking in Hudson Valley
An elderly New York man needed to be rescued while hiking in the Hudson Valley.
On Tuesday, the New York State DEC released its DEC Forest Rangers - Week in Review. Among recent statewide forest ranger's actions were two hiking rescues across New York State. One that happened in the Hudson Valley.
Rescue in Town of Windham, Greene County, NY
On Saturday, April 2 at approximately 8:30 p.m., DEC Dispatch notified Forest Ranger Fox of a hiker who was vomiting and unable to continue hiking in the Elm Ridge Wild Forest.
After determining the subject's location on the Escarpment Trail, Rangers Fox, Gullen, and Mitchell hiked in to meet him and his hiking partner, who were slowly continuing.
Long Island Man Needs To Be Rescued
The DEC soon made contact with the hiker. He was identified as a 77-year-old from Farmingdale.
The Long Island man said he was experiencing nausea and weakness.
Wilderness Rescue
Rangers provided hot fluids and food and started a fire to warm the pair.
Eventually, the 77-year-old recovered enough strength to continue, officials say.
Rangers carried his pack and assisted the subject out of the woods. Rangers provided a courtesy transport to the subject's vehicle at the East Windham trailhead. Resources were clear at 2:30 a.m.
Town of Keene, Essex County, NY
The next day, around 9:30 a.m., Forest Rangers Evans and Lewis responded to a call for an injured hiker on Big Slide Mountain.
At 11:25 a.m., Ranger Evans found the 34-year-old woman from Scotia.
Rangers splinted the hiker's injured shoulder and helped her to the trailhead.
