The Zika Virus was reported in another Hudson Valley individual today.

This brings the total number of New Yorkers with the virus up to 11, with two of them right here in our area. Two weeks ago an Orange County resident tested positive for the virus after traveling to South America.

According to the Rockland County Department of Health, the latest case is an unidentified woman living in Rockland County. Like the Orange County patient, this case of Zika Virus was also contracted during a visit to South America. The woman is not pregnant and officials believe that the disease was caused by a mosquito bite while in South America.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a travel advisory for affected countries in Central and South America, the Caribbean and Samoa and Cape Verde. The infection is associated with severe birth defects, including microcephaly (a condition in which a baby's head is smaller than expected when compared to babies of the same sex and age) and other poor pregnancy outcomes in babies of mothers who were infected with Zika virus while pregnant.

Because of the current cold temperatures, there is no mosquito activity in the Hudson Valley right now, so the chances of catching Zika is slim.

Recently, Health Quest pharmacist Kelcey Noble appeared on the Boris and Robyn Show and talked about the danger of Zika spreading to the Hudson Valley. She shared five important things everyone show know about the current outbreak.
