One of the best annual meteor showers is expected to light up the sky this weekend.

The Quadrantid meteor shower is expected Friday night into Saturday morning, CBS News reports. The Quadrantid meteor shower happens around this time each year when leftover comet particles and broken asteroids come around the sun, according to NASA.

"Every year the Earth passes through these debris trails, which allows the bits to collide with our atmosphere where they disintegrate to create fiery and colorful streaks in the sky," NASA says.

NASA calls the meteor shower "one of the best annual meteor showers."  60 to 200 meteors can be seen each hour in certain weather conditions during the peak of the Quadrantid meteor shower.

Unfortunately for us in the Hudson Valley, it doesn't appear to be ideal weather conditions to view the Quadrantid meteor shower this year. The National Weather Service is predicting showers and patchy fog for the region.
