Ida filled New Rochelle High School with about 10 feet of water. The cleanup continues but school officials deemed the high school unsafe for students and educators.
"The damage is significant, caused by the overflow and flooding of the lake and backup from the City of New Rochelle sewer system," New Rochelle Superintendent of Schools Jonathan P. Raymond said in a letter.
WCBS reports the high school may be closed until November due to "toxic soup of sewage that contaminated" the first floor of the high school.
The high school has excessive water/sewer damage to the ground levels, including the library and surrounding classrooms and offices, and to the athletic facilities, offices, equipment, and weight rooms, wrestling and training rooms, according to Raymond.
"All these systems and structures are contaminated with sewer water," Raymond added.
Raymond says they are "aggressively pursuing other options" and working with top New Rochelle officials in hopes of conducting in-person classes. Officials are also exploring using tents.
