After six days of scouring the Hudson River for a missing swimmer, the active search has been suspended.

Last Tuesday, police were called following reports of a number of people swimming in the Hudson River near Waryas Park in Poughkeepsie.

At least one person began struggling with the current and it's believed 49-year-old Paul Moschitta of Poughkeepsie ran into the river to try and help. However, the 49-year-old got pulled out by the current.

For the past six days, City of Poughkeepsie Police Department, City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department, Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, Dutchess County Regional Underwater Search and Recovery Team, Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, New York State Park Police and the United States Coast Guard were unsuccessful in their combined search for the missing swimmer.

"Since Tuesday, an extensive search of the Hudson River off of the City of Poughkeepsie shore line has been conducted. Various search methods were utilized including aerial search by helicopters, surface searches by boats and underwater searches utilizing sonar and police divers," the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office wrote in a press release.

On Sunday at 6 p.m., police announced the active search for the 49-year-old is over unless something else develops.

Five people were rescued on Tuesday and multiple people were taken to a hospital, officials say.
