Retail Giant Announces More Closures
Many will be searching for work after a retail giant announced plans to close almost 100 stores.
On Thursday, Sears Holdings, which owns Sears and Kmart, announced 72 stores will close in the near future.
In a press release, the company said they identified approximately 100 non-profitable stores, 72 of which will begin store closing sales in the near future. A list of the 72 stores will be announced soon, the company said. We will update this story once the closures are known.
"We continue to evaluate our network of stores, which are a critical component in our transformation, and will make further adjustments as needed and as warranted," the company said in a first-quarter holdings report.
The announcement comes about two weeks after Sears Holdings revealed it was closing 40 stores which are on top of 166 announced closures. Adding it all up, around 275 Sears and Kmart stores will close in 2018, Time reports.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the company has seen sales decrease for 26 straight quarters.
In June 2017, Sears Holdings announced plans to close 72 locations. Those locations included the Kmart in New Windsor. It was later announced the Sears at the Hudson Valley Mall in Kingston was closing. Gold's Gym will be taking over the old Sears store space at the Middletown Galleria.
