On Monday, the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office confirmed an investigation into a one-car fatal crash that occurred on Route 44 in the Town of Pleasant Valley.
A preliminary investigation revealed on Saturday at 3:15 p.m., a 2017 Toyota minivan operated by 45-year-old Michael A. Santiago of Poughkeepsie was traveling eastbound on Route 44 near Rossway Road when the minivan exited the roadway off the southern shoulder and struck two signs, a mailbox and finally a utility pole.
Santiago, who was the sole occupant, was transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Pleasant Valley Fire Department.
At this time the primary factors in the crash appear to be erratic operation and unsafe speed, police say.
The investigation is continuing by the Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau and Crash Investigation Unit, and more information may be released as it becomes available, according to the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.
