Police: Putnam County Woman Made Up Identity Theft in Dutchess County
A Putnam County woman is accused of making up a claim that her identity was stolen in Dutchess County.
On Monday, New York State Police BCI at Dover Plains arrested Virginia Wittenberg of Carmel for second-degree offering a false instrument for filing.
The arrest stems from an initial identity theft report Wittenberg filed with the State Police in Dover Plains in July 2016. Wittenberg allegedly originally reported she was the victim of identity theft.
As police investigated the claim, they determined that statement was fabricated. Authorities didn’t reveal how their investigation led to the allegation.
Wittenberg was arrested for filing the false report. She was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Dover court on Jan. 5.
