Police: Hudson Valley Man Drives Into Creek

A Hudson Valley man lost control of his car, went airborne, and traveled 75 feet into a large body of water.

On Thursday, the Ulster County Sheriff's Office responded near 7100 State Route 28 for a report of a car submerged in the water.

Upon arrival, a 2005 Subaru Legacy was seen in the water beneath a bridge near the intersection of Route 28 and Broad Street Hollow Road in the Town of Shandaken, police say. The vehicle was heavily damaged and unoccupied.

Emergency personnel began searching the creek and surrounding area for the driver. Kyle A. Ryan, 21, of Shandaken was later found at his home, officials say.

According to the Ulster County District Attorney's Office, a preliminary investigation suggests while traveling west on Route 28, the vehicle crossed the fog line onto the shoulder of the roadway, continued off the shoulder, struck the guide rail, traveled atop the guide rail before striking several trees and ultimately becoming airborne, traveling approximately 75 feet and then coming to rest in a large waterway feeding into the Esopus Creek.

Ryan returned to the scene where he was evaluated by EMS and issued several traffic tickets.
