Over 20 Dutchess County residents were displaced following a number of weekend fires.

On Sunday around 4:30 a.m., the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department responded to a large fire at 7 North Hamilton Street. Responding firefighters found a large volume fire coming from a first floor apartment.

When they arrived a man’s screams could be heard from the second floor. With heavy smoke coming from every window a bucket was raised from a truck in attempt to save the man, officials say.

Firefighter Matt Doherty was in the bucket as well and as he reached for the victim, the man fell back into the window. Doherty was able to reach into the burning apartment and pull the man to safety.

As the fire continued to burn at 7 North Hamilton Street, it spread to a pair of neighboring buildings.

A fire at 9 North Hamilton Street was contained to the attic of the building. Officials tell Hudson Valley Post the fire caused heavy damage but is fixable.

The apartment building at 7 North Hamilton Street was completely destroyed. 21 were displaced and relocated by the Red Cross. Officials tell Hudson Valley Post the displayed comes from 7 and 9 North Hamilton Street.

The fire remains under investigation and the cause is not yet known.

The Arlington Fire District provided assistance during the blaze. It wasn’t the only major fire the department battled over the weekend.

Officials say by the time the first truck arrived on the scene, 6 minutes after the call, the porch fire entered the main living areas of the single family home.

The residents of home were inside during the fire and were able to safely leave the home before the fire department’s arrival.
