New Program To Help Prevent Sexual Assault is Launched in the Hudson Valley

If you've ever been out at a party, bar, restaurant, etc, chances are you've seen someone who is being bothered by another individual. A guy who just won't take no for an answer, someone who is beginning to cross the line and it's making everyone nervous. Maybe, you've been the person who is on the receiving end of the unwanted attention and you wish there was someone to help you out. Now there is.

Ulster County Executive Mike Hein announced the launch a new program in conjunction with Ulster County Crime Victims Assistance Program, called Ulster County Bystanders Against Sexual Assault program.

This program, the first of its kind in New York State will provide training for bar staff so that they will be better able to recognize the signs of someone who is receiving unwanted attention, what qualifies as sexual assault, how and why do sexual predators offend, and how important consent is. Its aim is to prevent sexual assault before it ever happens and to reduce the number of sexual assaults.

This has launched in the college town of New Paltz and currently, three bars are participating P&G's Restaurant & Bar, McGillicuddy's Restaurant and Tap House, and Murphy's Restaurant & Pub. Each establishment who complete the training will receive certification so that patrons will know that they care about this issue and the community in which they conduct business.
