Police arrested a man who is accused of fondling a sleeping Hudson Valley college student.

Kevin Guerrero, 20, of New Windsor was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree rape and second-degree burglary, both felonies.

According to New Paltz Police, on Sunday around 5:45 a.m., Guerrero entered a SUNY New Paltz woman’s off-campus apartment in the Village of New Paltz and sexually assaulted her as she slept. The woman was able to wake up and fend off the suspect who then fled the area.

The woman provided police with a description of Guerrero. New Paltz detectives soon learned there were two other incidents where a man forced his way into nearby apartments. In both cases, the intruder was spotted by residents before any further crime was committed.

In both cases, the residents provided a description that matched Guerrero, authorities say.

Guerrero was identified as a suspect through intensive investigative efforts by the New Paltz Police Department and SUNY New Paltz Police Department. It’s believed he had no relationship with the victims.

Guerrero was arraigned in Town of New Paltz Court and remanded to the custody of the Ulster County Jail on no bail. He is scheduled to return to New Paltz Court for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 13.

The investigation is continuing and additional charges may be filed.

The New Paltz Police Department was assisted by the SUNY New Paltz Police Department and the New York State Police.
