Moose Sighting Season Begins in New York

It's that time of year when Hudson Valley residents occasionally get surprised by a sighting of a moose in their town.

While moose aren't uncommon in New York, they usually don't wander this far down. Moose generally are seen in the "northeastern part of the state in the Adirondack Mountains and Taconic Highlands along the Massachusetts and Vermont borders" according to the DEC.

The DEC explains that September through October is breeding season.

Several Dutchess County residents have shared photos of a moose wandering around in their town.

Linck told us that he first saw the moose on Monday, September 15th, around 7:30am at a horse farm on Salt Point Turnpike. He added "Initially I thought they had a loose horse - then I was like wait a minute."

The moose had drivers pulling over to take photos. If you've seen the moose around town email us at Jess@HudsonValleyCountry.com.

New York DOT Warns of Moose on Roads

The New York State Department of Transportation shared a photo this week of a moose hanging out on the Adirondack Railroad in Hamilton County.

With that, the DOT wanted to remind drivers to stay alert, slow down and "Expect the unexpected - wildlife doesn’t follow the rules of the road. Also - NEVER approach, touch, or feed wild animals."
