Joyce Amundsen, a Plattekill Resident, Dies at 78
Joyce Amundsen, of Plattekill, New York passed away on December 19, 2017, with her family at her bedside. She was 78 years of age.
The widow of Stanley Amundsen, Joyce was born on June 15, 1939 in Cornwall, New York to Estella and George Smith.
Joyce married her childhood sweetheart Stanley Amundsen in 1956, enjoying 47 years of marriage until his death in 2003. After raising a family in Orange Lake, Joyce and Stanley had a house built in Plattekill, New York where densely forested area, furnished with a pond and stream, acted as the perfect playground for their grandchildren to whom they devoted much of their life.
Family was the most important aspect of Joyce’s life. As the strong matriarch, she instilled that same value into her three daughters who remain extremely close. Joyce was also full of compassion, acting as a caregiver for several family members who had become terminally ill.
Joyce was always busy, either chasing her grandchildren or enjoying the outdoors. She spent as much time outdoors as possible and could often be found in the sunshine pruning the many plants in her yard.
She is survived by: her three daughters, Lori Cavanaugh and her husband Kevin of Newburgh, New York; Tina Long and her husband Dale at home; and Debbie Kinsley also at home. She also left behind seven grandchildren: Jason Cavanaugh of Walden, New York; Jennifer Gamma of Newburgh, New York; Sean Cavanaugh of Newburgh, New York; David Long of Clearwater, Florida; Jonathan Long at home; Noel Kinsley of Plattekill, New York; and Melissa Short of Newburgh, New York. She is also survived by seven great grandchildren as well as her brother and sister-in-law Robert and Sandra Lanford in Stedman, North Carolina.
Joyce was predeceased by her brothers George and William Smith and sisters, Florence Lynch, Virginia Weeks, and Blanch Lanford as well as her beloved niece Linda Lanford.
The family would like to say thank you to the staff at Wingate Ulster-Highland for the care and comfort that they provided during her illness. A special thanks to Gabby Rubino, for the friendly touch she provided at both Wingate and at home.
