Three Important New York State Firewood Transportation Regulation

I love this time of year when the weather cools off and the humidity seems to have left us for a while. I am a big fan of fire pits and fireplaces. When it is hot in the summer, a fire can be nice in the evening, but once the temperatures start to drop in the Fall, a fire takes on a whole new feeling.

New York State Reminds Fireplace Owners About Firewood Rules in New York

Almost every house I have lived in has had a fireplace. Growing up, it seems that even though we moved a lot, we always managed to move into a house that had one. My grandfather's summer house had a big fireplace, even though it was only a small cottage, and it may be the one I remember the most.

That fireplace and the one he had in his apartment in our house cooked many a meal for all of us grandkids. That's right, I had the grandfather who would stick everything from hot dogs to steaks in one of those rectangular fire pit grill things and then sit in front of the fire cooking like he was making a s'more. And yes, we always made s'mores for dessert.

NYS DEC Shared Firewood Rules on Social Media

I bring all of this up because recently, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation sent out a reminder this past weekend about firewood transportation rules and safety. I guess October is Firewood Month, and it is important that we remember the rules about transporting wood from place to place. Wood transportation can be one of the main reasons invasive species spread from place to place.

The NYS DEC wants you to remember that this month and all year round, you can help prevent the spread of forest pests by following the New York State firewood regulations. (via NYS Department of Environmental Conservation)

1 - Untreated, NY-grown firewood must stay within a 50-mile radius of its source or origin.

2 - Untreated firewood may not be brought into NY from any other state.

3 - Heat-treated firewood can be transported anywhere in NY, but it must have a receipt or label that says, “New York Approved Heat-Treated Firewood/Pest-Free”.
