No One Hurt After Car Falls 100 Feet into Water in Hudson Valley

It was a very scary situation Wednesday morning in the Hudson Valley when a car fell 100 feet down an embankment and landed hood-first in a river.

On Wednesday around 10 a.m., multiple first responders responded to a report of a car over an embankment near the Racoon Saloon on Route 9W in Marlboro.

Responding officers found a 1996 silver Honda Civic over the embankment and into a stream. The embankment was about 100 and the car landed vertical, police say.

The Marlboro Fire Department was dispatched and members from the fire department used a series of ropes and pulleys to lower a fireman down the embankment to the car.

The fireman then verified the car was unoccupied.

The owner of the car was identified as a 26-year-old woman from Beacon. She was found at her home in good health, police say.

A further investigation revealed a 2005 Dodge Caravan, driven by a 78-year-old Newburgh man, unknowingly backed into the parked Honda while trying to back into a parking space causing the Honda to slide on snow and ice and ultimately slide over the embankment and down into the river, officials say.

The 76-year-old Newburgh man was given a ticket for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

The accident caused massive delays in both directions on Route 9W in Ulster County late Wednesday morning.

No injuries were reported, according to police.
