On Monday around 7:15 a.m., New Rochelle police officers and New Rochelle firefighters responded to the YMCA at 50 Weyman Avenue on a report of a chemical exposure causing respiratory distress to multiple patrons.
The cause of the exposure is under investigation by New Rochelle Police Detectives and at this time, appears to be that an accidental mixture of chemicals created a hazardous condition, police say.
The mixture of chemicals led to respiratory distress to 13 people who were transported to area hospitals, according to the New Rochelle Police Department. Their conditions were not released.
"We are deeply concerned to learn 13 YMCA members and staff needed treatment. We remain in contact with staff and members to check on their status," New Rochelle YMCA wrote on Facebook.
Officials from New Rochelle YMCA believe a wrong chemical was added into a chlorine container.
"At 7:15 AM this morning, our aquatics staff indicated that we were low on chlorine. Our maintenance staff added the wrong chemical into the chlorine container in our pool’s pump room, not into our pool. This created a noxious gas, which was mostly contained to our pool area. Immediate steps were taken to evacuate the entire building to protect staff, members and guests, as well as the facility itself," New Rochelle YMCA stated.
The New Rochelle YMCA is 0.2 miles from the New Rochelle Diner, according to Google Maps.
Around 9:30 a.m., the New Rochelle Fire Department announced the building was safe, but out of an abundance of caution the New Rochelle YMCA remained closed until Tuesday.
Officials add current information indicates this incident was accidental and not criminal in nature.
