While New York State works on getting to Phase 1 of reopening, the Center for Disease Control has every talking about the upcoming school year.

Students in New York have been out of school since the beginning of March and will not be returning for the rest of the 2020 school year.

With that being said, the CDC has released a list of guidelines for when schools and day camps plan on reopening.

According to the CDC website "These recommendations depend on community monitoring to prevent COVID-19 from spreading. Communities with low levels of COVID-19 spread and those with confidence that the incidence of infection is genuinely low (e.g., communities that remain in low transmission or that have entered Step 2 or 3) may put in place the practices described below as part of a gradual scale-up of operations."

They also add that these decisions and recommendations should be made "in collaboration with local health officials and other State and local authorities."

Here are some of the CDC guidelines for schools when they reopen:

  • Face coverings should be worn by staff and encouraged in students.
  • Cancel all field trips, inter-group events, and extracurricular activities
  • Space seating/desks to at least six feet apart
  • Turn desks to face in the same direction (rather than facing each other), or have students sit on only one side of tables, spaced apart
  • Close communal use spaces such as dining halls and playgrounds if possible
  • • Keep each child’s belongings separated from others’ and in individually labeled containers, cubbies, or areas and taken home each day and cleaned, if possible.

The CDC has a full list of regulations for schools reopening.

How do you think students and teachers alike will handle these changes? Will you consider NOT sending your child back to schools?
