William A. Curry of Wappingers Falls entered into rest Friday, May 5, 2017 at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was 85.
Son of the late William F. and Jennie Oakley Curry, he was born on September 27, 1931 in Peekskill. He married Audrey Caswell on December 2, 1951 in Ossining. Bill and his wife were inseparable; they did everything together and especially loved to travel. Mrs. Curry survives at home in Wappingers Falls.
Mr. Curry proudly served his country in the United States Army 2nd Division-23rd Infantry Reg. Company B from 1952-1954 and the New Paltz Reserve Unit from 1954 to 1961. Bill went on to work for IBM in Poughkeepsie as 2nd line management for cafeterias and then the IBM Club, until his retirement.
In his spare time, Bill loved the outdoors, especially fishing. During the late 1960's he served as assistant leader for the Boy Scouts with his sons. He was always looking for a challenger in a game of basketball and was an avid skier later becoming a member of the Over 70 Ski Club. He also enjoyed going to the gym. Bill was affectionately known as "Papa Bill", whether he was a relative or not. He was always there for everyone that needed help.
In addition to his wife, Audrey, survivors include his children, Norman D. Curry and his wife, Michelle of Poughkeepsie, Michael P. Curry and his wife, Laura of Liberty, and Darla L. Hickman and her husband, Steven of Poughkeepsie; his sister, Dora Stanley of Peekskill; 6 grandchildren, Danielle and her husband, Scott VanAllen, Jennifer and her husband, Nishan Mohammed, David Curry and his fiancée, Diana Browne, Steven Hickman, Kristy and Alexis, along with 8 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brother, Frank Curry and his sister, Barbara Ackley.
A memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 E. Main Street, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. Military honors will follow visitation.
