A New Adorable Cub AND Red Panda Cameras in Millbrook
An adorable bundle of furry joy was born into the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo in Millbrook recently, and just this week, the team provided an update on the little one's progress.
We can report that the cub is very healthy and growing quickly - and she's a feisty one!
Trevor-Lovejoy reported over the summer that there are 'perhaps fewer than 3,000' red panda left in the wild, noting they are an endangered species.

Red Panda Lucy & Zhu's Cub Is Born
The staff at the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo have been keeping followers updated about the highly anticipated birth of Red Panda Lucy and Zhu's cub.
Back in mid-July, Trevor-Lovejoy at Millbrook School announced the birth of an endangered red panda cub on June 16th. Proud parents 7-year-old Lucy and 12-year old Zhu had been 'recommended for breeding' by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan Program (SSP), reports Trevor-Lovejoy.
Prior to coming to Millbrook in 2024 Lucy lived at the Philadelphia Zoo, but was born in 2018 at the Scovill Zoo in Illinois. Zhu joined the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo in 2017 from Zoo Knozville, but was born at Binder Park Zoo in 2013. Zhu has two additional cubs who now reside in California at the Santa Barbara Zoo.
It's A Girl! Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo Announce Baby Girl Red Panda Cub
At the six-week mark, the Director of Animal Care, Kyleen Depew, at Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo announced that the cub was doing well, and mom Lucy was caring for the new addition quite well.
We have closely monitored Lucy and her cub’s progress over the last month. We are excited to watch them develop each day. Lucy has been raising the cub in her exhibit without our assistance. This provides the best chance for a normal, healthy red panda baby, who can someday pass down those behaviors to their own offspring. During this time, Zhu has been able to remain in the exhibit with Lucy and the cub.
On August 19th, the Zoo confirmed that Lucy and Zhu's cub was indeed a female. Two recent exams indicated that the baby-girl red panda cub was 'very healthy and growing quickly.' The staff also indicated that the cub will probably start going outside within the next month or so, so visitors to the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo may see her out and about soon.
They did report that once the cub is weened and starts eating solid food, she will 'most likely head to another AZA zoo before the next breeding season' in order to allow Lucy and Zhu to try and bring more red panda cubs into the world.
