It's the holiday season and the red kettles are back with a fancy new upgrade.

If you plan on going shopping in the Hudson Valley at any point this holiday season, you are more likely than not to come across a volunteer ringing a bell standing at a Salvation Army red kettle asking for donations.

We have all been there, your walking in the mall going from store to store and you come across the red kettle and you reach into your pockets for some change or cash and you realize you have nothing. NADA, no cash because in today's world most of us just carry the plastic.

Yes I have admittedly used that excuse before as I approach the kettle. LOL! Admit it you have to. Anyway the Salvation Army has announced that starting this year they will now be excepting new technology for donations, according to CBS 6.

The Salvation Army said that they’re adding NFC tags to their red kettle signs across the country which means we can use Apple Pay or Google Pay on your smartphone to make a donation. The change is being done mostly because they say that they’ve noticed fewer people carry cash these days.

So when you see a red kettle this year, you can hold your phone up to the Apple Pay or Google Pay tag on the sign, and a screen will appear on your phone that allows you to enter your donation.

The Red Kettle campaign is underway now thru Christmas Eve.
