A Newburgh heroin dealer is heading to prison for possessing around $5,000 worth of heroin.

On Monday in Orange County Court, 28-year-old Davonte Hawkins of Newburgh, was convicted after a trial for third and fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, on August 2, 2016, Hawkins tried to toss heroin over a fence, when he saw police coming his way on Grand Street in the City of Newburgh. The heroin was recovered, with a street value of around $5,000.

“The evidence in this case supported the court’s verdict that this defendant intended on selling this heroin, likely in the City of Newburgh,” District Attorney David M. Hoovler said. “My office will continue to seek severe state prison sentences for those who traffic in the very types of drugs which are destroying our communities and claiming far too many lives."

Hawkins faces up to 15 years in prison when he is sentenced in June.
