John P. Cunningham, a Poughquag Resident, Dies at 75
POUGHQUAG – John P. Cunningham, 75, an area resident since 1970, died on October 8, 2017 at home. He previously lived in Jamaica, Queens.
Born in New York City on October 15, 1941, he was the son of the late Leo J. and Helen (Weber) Cunningham. John retired as a Detective from the Ballistics Department of New York City Police Department in 1983 after 20 years of service. He was the owner of John P. Cunningham and Sons, Inc., a building and developing company with operations in Beekman and Union Vale for 30 years. John was also an honorary Deputy Sherriff with the Dutchess County Sherriff’s Office.
On September 21, 1963 at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church in Jamaica, Queens, John married Dolores (Smith) Cunningham. His loving wife of 54 years survives at home. He is also survived by his children, Laura Pushkarsh and her husband Christopher of Poughquag, Debra Petriccione and her partner Bruce Giamei of Lagrangeville, John Paul Cunningham, Jr. and his wife Amy of Poughquag, and Thomas Cunningham and his partner Kristen of Stormville; his grandchildren, Caroline and her husband Matthew, Ryan and his fiancée Sara, Allison, Anna, Matthew, Jack, Hannah, Rachel, Brian, Avery, and Leah; his daughter-in-law, Michelle Cunningham; his sister, Helen Grew, and many other friends and relatives, especially Joe Smith, who was also his best friend. In addition to his parents, John was also predeceased by his three brothers, Edward, Lee, and Al.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday at 11 am at St. Kateri Church, 1925 Route 82, Lagrangeville followed by burial at St. Denis Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in honor of family friends to either FRAXA Research Foundation or ALS Association.
