Jacobus Wilhelmus van Niekerk Smit, a Hopewell Business Owner, Dies at 97
Jacobus Wilhelmus van Niekerk Smit, 97, died on October 17, 2017 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
Born in Durbanville, South Africa on May 13, 1920, he was the son of Jacobus Wilhelmus and Christina Katarina Smit. He was the owner of J.W. Smit Fencing in Hopewell Junction for 36 years until his retirement in 1998.
On November 14, 1959 at the Hopewell Reformed Church, Jacobus married Shirley Smit who predeceased him on December 9, 2001. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Catherine and Charles Szymanski, Jasper and Heidi Smit, and Kerry and Ruth Pokines; and his grandchildren, Abby Szymanski, Alan, Helen, Freda and Shirley Smit, and Christopher and Sara Pokines.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 5-7pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Jct.
