The new year has brought new things to a popular nature center here in the HUdosn Valley. The Hudson Highlands Nature Museum became the Hudson Highlands Nature Center (HHNC) with the calendar flipped to 2024.

The HHNC has a full calendar of events they are offering this winter at all of its locations. Everything from cookie parties to open houses, star gazing, and maple tree tapping is planned for January alone.

The HHNC has two locations in Cornwall, New York. The Outdoor Discovery CCampus is at 120 Muser Drive. That location has trails open from dawn to dusk, to people, not pets, and Grasshopper Grove which runs from April to November.

Hudson Highlands Nature Center Has Wildlife Ambassadors

I am most familiar with the Wildlife Education Center because when I was in elementary school in Cornwall that is where we went on field trips with our class to learn about the animals that live in the woods. My favorite animal ambassador at the time was an owl. I have told you on other occasions how he fascinated me because he was so still you thought he was a statue and then he would blink.

The HHNC has many ambassadors for visitors to the center to enjoy but sadly this week they had to announce the passing of one. The Great-horned Owl Ambassador who had been at the center for 35 years is now flying the rainbow bridge.

Cherished Owl Ambassador has Died at a New York Nature Center

A lot like the owl I fell in love with this bird had been at the center for more than 3 decades due to being hit by a car. With the loss of an eye and wing damage he was unable to be released so the HHNC cared for him over the years and so he became one of their many Wild Life Ambassadors.

We will always remember his goofy wobbles as he walked around his enclosure, and the way he loved to dance in the rain/hose (via Facebook - Hudson Highlands Nature Center)
