If you have checkout anxiety like me and ever stood at a Walmart checkout digging for a credit card, those days are over!

Walmart is finally getting tap-to-pay.

The retail giant announced that it is beginning to roll out contactless payment at select Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations starting Monday, August 24. The plan is to have tap-to-pay available at all U.S. Walmart stores and Sam’s Clubs by the end of 2026.

That means customers will be able to simply tap an eligible contactless credit or debit card, phone or smartwatch at checkout.

And yes, Walmart is a little late to this particular party. Contactless payments have been pretty standard at plenty of other stores for years, but Walmart has largely pushed customers toward its own Walmart Pay system.

Now the company is opening the door to the same tap-and-go convenience shoppers already use elsewhere.

Customers will also be able to add eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club and OnePay cards to their digital wallets. Walmart says tap-to-pay will complement existing options including cash, traditional credit cards and Walmart Pay.

There is one catch: the rollout isn't happening everywhere at once. Select locations get the feature beginning August 24, with the nationwide rollout expected to be completed by the end of the year.

So, Walmart shoppers, welcome to the tap-to-pay era. Your phone can finally do at Walmart what it has been doing pretty much everywhere else for years.
