In spite of recently being named as having America's best corporate reputation, some people in the state of New York apparently still haven't heard of Wegmans?

A debate on the New York state Senate floor over the plastic bag ban lead to a somewhat embarrassing moment for one state politician. LoHud reports that the humorous exchange happened Sunday when Senator Rich Funke of Monroe County and Senator Todd Kaminsky of Nassau County debated the recently implemented ban.

According to LoHud, it went something like this:

Funke: "If I have old Wegmans plastic bags at home, can I bring them to the store and use them again?"

Kaminsky: "Did you say an old white man's plastic bag?"

At this point, the Senate floor started to chuckle. Funke then corrects Kaminsky.

Funke: "Wegmans. You may not — Wegmans."

Kaminsky, who also chairs the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee, said he had never heard of the upstate chain and said he was more familiar with stores like Waldbaum's.

Wegmans continues to expand, with more stores opening in New York, including their first New York City location in the Brooklyn Navy Yards in 2019. Their Harrison location, in Westchester County, is anticipating a spring 2020 opening.
