Yes, I said it, kids are expensive.

They're also cute, and fun, and grow so fast, and go through clothes and accessories and kid-related items quite quickly, so let's talk about saving you some money when it comes to those necessary kid items.

Target, For The Win

I'm sure many local moms are on the same page as me when it comes to their feelings towards Target.  If I need something kid-related, chances are my first stop is Target, where I will undoubtedly come home with what I needed, plus 34 random other things.  Well, Target comes through once again this year with their car seat trade-in event, the first of two for 2022, and here's how it works.

Trade-In Your Carseat For A Target Coupon

  • Bring in an old, damaged, even expired car seat you are no longer using.  Trade-in dates run from April 18th through 30th.
  • Receive a coupon for 20% off one car seat, stroller, or other select baby gear items.
  • You can access your coupon through the Target app or through their Target Circle Program.
  • For this round of trade-ins, coupons need to be used by May 14, 2022.

Easy as that, right?

What happens to the car seats they collect during the trade-in?

Target partners with Waste Management and materials from the older car seats get recycled.  According to their official announcement about the promotion, 1.7 million car seats have been recycled since 2016 through this initiative, and 25.4 million pounds of car seat materials have been recycled since 2016 as well.  Did you know that Target has a pretty strong focus on sustainability efforts and waste elimination?  You can read more about these priorities as part of their Target Forward program.

Speaking From Experience

Personally, I've traded in my fair share of seats and participated in the Target Car Seat Trade In since I became a parent in 2015.  When my daughter was ready to move out of her infant seat in 2016, a friend who had older kids gave me an old seat to trade in to get the coupon to use towards the next size seat.  This year, I'll trade one of my daughter's older seats in to get the coupon for my sister to get some necessities for my 7-month-old nephew.  It's a win for everyone involved, recycling items that are taking up space in my basement and helping someone else save some money on baby gear they need.
