Earlier this week a Hudson Valley resident got a quick lesson on how to properly dispose of an old American flag.

Pictures made their way around Facebook of an American flag sitting in the garbage outside of a City of Poughkeepsie residents home. The Department of Public Works employees who saw the mistake, quickly fixed the problem.

It's reported that the employees brought the flag to  Eleanor Roosevelt State Office Building where it will be properly disposed of.

The correct way to dispose of  a torn or dirty flag is to contact your local FVW so a special ceremony can be held according to their website.

New York State Senator Sue Serino is doing what she can so the Hudson Valley is educated on respecting our flag.

In an press release it was announced that from now until May 23rd, in celebration of Memorial Day, there will be a statewide collection of worn or tattered American flags that will get a proper ceremony and disposal.

Serino states "I am happy to announce that to help with this initiative, my District Office, located at 4254 Albany Post Road in Hyde Park, will serve as an additional collection site. Our office is open Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am until 5:00pm."

The flags will be brought to the Memorial Watchfire Ceremony at the New York State Fairgrounds.

In the statement Serino also says "Our American flag has long stood as a symbol of freedom and a beacon of hope for millions. As such, it should be treated with respect and dignity even after it has become weather-worn."
