A Kingston man was charged with stealing close to $10,000 in unemployment benefits.

According to New York State Police, 42-year-old Robert A. Nelson, of Kingston received $9,080.25 in unemployment benefits from October 1, 2012 – May 5, 2013. Police say it was later determined that Nelson was employed during the time period in which he received the benefits.

Nelson was charged with 3rd-degree grand larceny, 1st-degree offering a false instrument for filing, and 1st-degree falsifying business records, all felonies.

Nelson was arraigned in the City of Kingston Court. He was released on his own recognizance and ordered to reappear in City of Kingston Court at a later date.
