John Sullivan, an Area Resident, Dies at 81
FISHKILL – John Sullivan, 81, an area resident since 2013, died on December 30, 2017 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center with his loving family at his side.
He previously lived in Brooklyn where he was born on January 11, 1936. He was the son of the late John and Madeleine (Esposito) Sullivan. He proudly served in the US Navy from 1953-1957. John had been employed by the NYC Department of Transportation in Brooklyn for 25 years until his retirement in 1986. John was a parishioner at St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill, and was a Third Degree member of Knights of Columbus #1073 in Brooklyn.
On May 27, 1961 at St. Brendan’s Church in Brooklyn, John married Rosemary (Doherty) Sullivan. His loving wife of 56 years survives at home. He is also survived by his son, John J. Sullivan and his wife Alexandra of Hopewell Junction; his grandchildren, Samantha, John, and Matthew Sullivan; his sister, Margaret Waldhelm and her husband Donald of Cairo, NY; his brother-in-law, Fred Bencivenga of North Babylon, NY; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members. John was also predeceased by his siblings, Catherine Bencivenga, Teresa Cardinale and her husband Salvatore, and Rita Winant and her husband William.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday at 10am at St. Mary, Mother of the Church followed by burial at St. Denis Cemetery with military honors.
