Why Are Green Lights Shining Across Dutchess County?
Some houses and businesses across Dutchess County, NY have exchanged the traditional color outside lights for the color green.
If you spend any time driving around Dutchess County, you might have already noticed that some area businesses and houses have swapped the outside lights from the traditional white/natural color light bulbs to green ones. Many are wondering do the green lights have a special meaning?
What Do Green Lights Signify?
If you see a business or house with a green light on outside, it has a very special meaning. It's called "Operation Green Light," a nationwide campaign to start to show community support for military veterans, highlight the challenges they face, and raise awareness of available resources.
Operation Green Light, which was started back in 2021, runs the week leading up to Veterans Day (11/11/2025), and invites counties and residents across the nation to shine a green light outside of their homes and businesses to remind veterans that they are seen, valued, and supported by their community.
Why Green?
The campaign selected green lights because they symbolize hope, renewal, and a positive transition from military to civilian life, according to NACO. To participate, folks are encouraged to simply change one light to green to show support and gratitude for military veterans.
