11 Cities In New York State With The Highest Property Crimes Rates

Property crimes are not to be taken lightly. It's not just a situation where someone stole something that belongs to you. There is often violence that accompanies certain property crimes. Even if violence isn't involved, the feeling of being violated, often in a very personal way, is traumatic. Having a stranger rifle through your private items, home or car, isn't something to be taken lightly. Taking a look at statistics provided by the state's Division of Criminal Justice Services, these are the counties with the most violent crimes committed with a firearm.

New York State and the FBI use seven Index crime categories as indicators of overall crime trends: murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, which are classified as violent crimes; and the property crimes of burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft. The FBI created these categories to allow for uniform crime reporting across all 50 states.

As we delve into the areas with the highest property crime rates, I've included the major city in each of the counties, which are the statistics the state provides, since they tend to be more identifiable. These statistics are from 2021, which are the most up-to-date numbers that the state has provided.

11. Troy (Rensselaer County): The property crime rate is 1542.2

Rensselaer County is part of New York's Capital Region with Troy as its county seat. The eastern boundary runs along the New York–Vermont and New York–Massachusetts borders.

The population of Rensselaer County is 162,109. The violent crime rate of 286.8 and the rate of violent crimes committed with a firearm rate is 78.3.

10. Syracuse (Onondaga County): The property crime rate is 1,579.90

Onondaga County, which includes Syracuse, has a population of 470,355. It is considered west central in the Finger Lakes region of New York. For many New Yorkers, it is known best as the home of The Great New York State Fair. It has a violent crime rate of 355.9 and the violent crimes committed with a firearm rate is 77.6.

9. Rochester (Monroe County): The property crime rate is 1,633.70

Rochester is located in Monroe County, which is between Buffalo and Syracuse. It sits on the border of the United States, right off of Lake Ontario. Monroe County has a population of 759,863 as of 2021, making it the third-largest city in the state. Its Rochester has surpassed Buffalo when it comes to gun violence. The rate of violent crimes is 304.3 and the rate of violent crimes committed with a firearm is 134.9.

8. Jamestown (Chautauqua County): The property crime rate is 1,713.30

Chautauqua County has a population of 128,462. It is located in the southwest portion of the state.

With its two cities, Jamestown and Dunkirk, its 27 towns, and 15 villages, it covers 1,065 square miles. Because of its six beautiful lakes and approximately 50 miles of Lake Erie shoreline, there is no place in the county more than 25 miles from open water.

7. Ithaca (Tompkins County): The property crime rate is 1,736.00

Tompkins County has a population of 103,627. It has a low violent crime rate of 170.8 and the rate of violent crimes committed with a firearm is 21.2.

6. Buffalo (Erie County): The property crime rate is 1,802.40

Home of the Buffalo Bills, Erie County has a population of just under 1 million - 940,988, it is New York's second biggest city. The violent crime rate is 369.9 and the rate of violent crimes committed with a firearm is 123.1.

5. Utica (Oneida County): The property crime rate is 1,805.30

The population of Oneida County is 232,534. The violent crime rate is 279.1 and the rate of violent crimes committed with a firearm is 51.6.

4. Binghamton (Broome County): The property crime rate is 2,067.60

Broome County, which is located directly north of Scranton, Pennsylvania, in the southeast region of the state, has a population of 193,265, according to the most recent count from 2021.
