Just days before his birthday, an elderly man was hit by car while riding his bike in the Hudson Valley.

On Thursday, the Hyde Park Police Department responded to the area of 1577 Route 9G for a reported car vs bicycle accident. Arriving police found Lorenzo Calderon from Staatsburg unconscious.

Calderon appeared to be traveling south on Route 9G on a bicycle and was hit by a 2015 Toyota driven by a 50-year-old woman from Wappingers Falls, police say.

Calderon was transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital. He remains at the hospital and is listed in serious condition, officials say. Calderon turned 78 on Sunday, according to the Hyde Park Police Department.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. The accident is being investigated by the Hyde Park Police Department with help from the New York State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit. The Roosevelt Fire Department, Roosevelt Rescue Squad, Northern Dutchess Paramedics and New York State Police also assisted at the scene.
