Dutchess County Bids To Host 2019, 2020 NY Special Olympics

After hosting the 2016 and 2017 Winter Special Olympics, Dutchess County wants to host again in the future.

Hudson Valley News Network reports that Dutchess County has submitted a formal bid to host the 2019 and 2020 New York Summer Special Olympics. The Summer Special Olympics in New York hosts more than 1,000 athletes and over 500 coaches. Dutchess County had a record-setting number of volunteers participate in past games.

The Poughkeepsie Journal reports that the Dutchess Tourism CEO and President said hosting the Summer Games has been a goal since they hosted the Winter Games. Officials have also claimed that the event brings economic growth to the region.

The Summer Special Olympics has events like swimming, gymnastics, track, and basketball. Statewide, the Games supports over 30,000 volunteers, more than 68,000 athletes, and upwards of 5,000 coaches.

Siena College in Albany is the host of this year's Summer Special Olympics, and also hosted the Games last year. It has not been stated when the upcoming host will be named.
