10 Confirmed Cases of Coronavirus Linked to Lower Hudson Valley

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus connected to the Lower Hudson Valley soared to 10 on Wednesday. Two nearby school districts are closed because students may have been exposed.

There are now eleven confirmed cases of coronavirus in New York State, with almost all stemming from an infected man who lives in Westchester County.

Early Tuesday morning, we learned a New Rochelle lawyer in his 50s tested positive for coronavirus, also known as COVID-19. The man who takes Metro-North to commute to New York City marked the second New Yorker confirmed to have the virus which has killed over 3,000 worldwide, including 11 in the United States as of Thursday morning.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says it's the first apparent case of person-to-person spread of coronavirus in the tri-state area. Officials reported the man didn't travel to China or any other hotspot for COVID-19.

On Wednesday, Cuomo said four more from Westchester County tested positive for the coronavirus. The man's 20-year-old son, his 14-year-old daughter, his wife and the person who drove the sick man to the hospital all tested positive for COVID-19.

The 20-year-old attends Yeshiva University. The 14-year-old goes to a school in the Bronx. Both are closed until next week.

Cuomo confirmed the New Rochelle man was initially treated at Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville before being transferred to New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Later on Wednesday, Cuomo provided an update and said a close friend of the New Rochelle man, as well as his wife and three of their children all have the coronavirus.

The children attend Westchester Torah Academy which will be closed until at least Friday.

Two Westchester County school districts announced they will be closed until next week due to the outbreak. The Hastings-on-Hudson Union Free School District and the Mount Vernon City School District are both closed.

Hastings-on-Hudson is closed because a parent was present in a location that is closed due to a confirmed case of the coronavirus, according to school officials. The New York Daily News reports two students, one who goes to Columbus School and the other Rebecca Turner Elementary School, have been quarantined over possible exposure to the virus.
