The New York State Department of Transportation as well as the New York State Police have been quite vocal this summer about highway safety, but a recent statistic might be the only thing they need to show exactly how much work still needs to be done.
There are several theme weeks that the NYSP use throughout the year. Speed Week in June, for example, resulted in thousands of tickets over a 7-day span, including 4,197 speeding tickets in the Hudson Valley alone. The recent post, however, was about a different kind of safety.

Work Zone Accidents in New York State
There have been multiple roadside accidents this year involving state vehicles being hit while parked on shoulders, with many resulting in injuries. The NYSP's response, called Operation Hardhat, recently had a very successful outing (below).
As the New York State Department of Transportation shared, 79 tickets were issued for violations on a single day (and at a single work zone) on the Taconic State Parkway. The high number of tickets can both be seen as great work by the NYSP as well as a discouraging portrait of New York drivers.
